Emery Signing Adds Depth
La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans have added another stellar defensive weapon to their squad for the upcoming 2011 season. The IFL’s seventh-leading tackler, Doug Emery, will be in training camp with the Spartans in February. Emery finished the 2010 season with 99 tackles which was seventh-best in the league despite playing in just 11 games.
The 6’1”, 215 lbs. linebacker/safety played college ball at Ferris State University. Emery played with the West Michigan Thunderhawks last year and will join former teammates Bryan Pray, Courtney Abbott, Emmanuel Spann, Jermaine Pruitt, and Amp Boone who have all signed with La Crosse this off-season. The Grand Rapids, Michigan, native also had two INT’s last year including one interception returned for a touchdown.
Emery joins rookie Wes McDermott at the linebacker position as the team’s first two signings at that spot. “Doug is another great player with a lot of ability that we are excited to have on our side,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “He brings the experience and knowledge of the indoor game that we need to keep improving our team. We’re really looking forward to these guys pushing each other in training camp.”
The Spartans, entering their second season in the Indoor Football League, were named the 2010 IFL Community Relations Franchise of the Year for their efforts in the community this past season. Season tickets are now on sale for the 2011 season for as low as $84 and can be purchased by calling 608-782-4461 or by visiting www.lacrossespartans.com.
Madland Returns As Defensive Coordinator
La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans will have Mitch Madland back as defensive coordinator for the 2011 season. Madland joined the team for the final four games mid-way through the Spartans’ inaugural season in 2010 as the team’s defensive coach. The Spartans defense finished eighth in the league in passing yards allowed last season under Madland.
Madland, who is also currently an assistant coach at nearby Winona State University, has three years of indoor football coaching experience prior to his work with the Spartans last season. He held the defensive coordinator position for the La Crosse Night Train and Myrtle Beach Stingrays in the National Indoor Football League. In addition, he was the head football coach at LaCrescent High School for two seasons.
“We were extremely impressed with the way he handled himself last season,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “He joined us late and was able to adapt to a system we already had in place and did a great job. We are really looking forward to having his experience on the sidelines.”
The Spartans will be hosting their first open tryouts of the season this Sunday, October 10, at the La Crosse Center. Potential participants can register online at www.lacrossespartans.com. Cost of the tryouts are $65.

Spartans Acquire Spann, Add Buckley
La Crosse, WI: La Crosse Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis has successfully completed his fourth trade in the past three weeks by securing the rights to wide receiver Emmanuel Spann from the West Michigan Thunderhawks today. Spann becomes the second wideout acquired via trade this offseason and will join former Thunderhawk teammate Bryan Pray in La Crosse for 2011. The Spartans were able to get Spann for future considerations.
Spann (6’0”, 189 lbs.) caught 46 passes for 534 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games last year for West Michigan. Coming out of Marshall University in 2009, he was invited to camp with the Atlanta Falcons and was rated among the top wide receivers in the country his senior year. In addition to receiving, he also served as holder and long snapper last year for the Thunderhawks.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Spartans have inked former Austin Peay standout Kevis Buckley to a one-year contract. Buckley (5’9”,186 lbs.) was a four-year starter at cornerback and was named to the First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference. He finished his collegiate career in 2009 among the school’s top five leaders in career interceptions.
“Adding these two guys to our roster really speaks volumes for what we are trying to do as a team,” General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “Both are very quick and versatile and we are really looking forward to having them in camp with us.”
The team will be holding its first open tryouts of the offseason on Sunday, October 10, at the La Crosse Center. The tryouts will begin at Noon that day with registrations and warm-ups beginning at 11:00 a.m. Players are encouraged to pre-register by logging on to www.lacrossespartans.com.

Spartans Sign McDermott
La Crosse, WI: La Crosse Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis continues his hard work to improve on the team’s 3-11 finish in 2010 with another defensive signing today. Former Morehead State All-American linebacker Wes McDermott signed a contract with the team over the weekend.
McDermott, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, was named to the Associated Press Third Team All-American squad and was named the Pioneer Football League (PFL) Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. McDermott was also named to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team.
The 6’0”, 245-pound linebacker finished his career in the top five of MSU’s career tackles list at 316 total tackles. McDermott notched 48 tackles-for-loss in his career which puts him 19th in FCS history and he averaged 1.09 tackles-for-loss throughout his career which puts him tied for 24th all-time in the FCS.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career and I am excited to play for the Spartans,” said McDermott. “I am honored to be playing for Coach Brown who was a great player in the NFL. It will be great to learn from him with all of the experience he brings to the team.”

Spartans "Amp" Up Defense
La Crosse, WI: After spending most of the last two weeks focusing on the offensive side of the ball, the La Crosse Spartans turned to the opposite side of the field today. The second-year team signed Amp Boone (5’10”, 195 lbs.) formerly with the West Michigan Thunderhawks to a one-year contract.
Last season, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff graduate was third on the Thunderhawks in total tackles after playing in just seven games. He started every game and totaled 43 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. Boone played safety at Arkansas Pine Bluff and both cornerback and safety in the IFL in 2010.
“This is a young but very promising cornerback who we feel will build on his experience from last season,” General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “The addition of Amp should make for an exciting competition in our secondary.”

Spartans Acquire Dibbles
La Crosse, WI: Wheeling and dealing has been the theme this week as the La Crosse Spartans completed their third trade this afternoon. La Crosse has traded the rights to defensive lineman Tommy Chavis to the Sioux Falls Storm in exchange for fellow defensive lineman Larry Dibbles. Chavis started every game for the Spartans last season while Dibbles saw time on of the top defensive line units in the IFL after being signed late last season.
Dibbles (6’3”, 290 lbs.) was a three-year starter at the University of Texas and was an All-Big 12 selection his junior and senior years while helping to lead the team to a national championship in 2005. Over the course of his four-year career, he recorded 107 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. He has spent time in the Arena Football League and the IFL since his college career.
“It’s been a very productive week for our organization,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis. “While Tommy was an asset to our line last season, I feel that Larry is going to do big things and his leadership qualities and his desire to win will be a true asset.”

Spartans Dealt Top Receiver
La Crosse, WI: For the second consecutive day, the La Crosse Spartans organization has made moves to solidify its offense for the team’s second season in the IFL. Today, the Spartans traded the rights to running back Ulysses Odoms and wide receiver Lawrence Hellams to the West Michigan Thunderhawks in exchange for offensive lineman Jermaine Pruitt and wide receiver Bryan Pray.
Pray is the highlight of the deal after leading the IFL in receiving yards per game last season snagging 704 yards in just seven games for a 100.6 ypg average. He hauled in 15 touchdowns in 48 receptions for the Thunderhawks including a 152 yard, three touchdown performance against the Spartans last season. “I’m excited to come to La Crosse,” Pray said. “The fans there are unbelievable and I’m looking forward to helping build the offense to go with an already great defense.”
The Pittsburgh State graduate injured himself after the first seven games in 2010 but will be ready to go for the start of training camp. Prior to his injury, he had five consecutive games with 100 or more yards receiving.
Pruitt, is a 6’4”, 287 lbs. offensive lineman out of Grand Valley State. He was a first-team All-IFL performer for the El Paso Generals in 2009.
“It’s been a great week for the Spartans organization thus far,” General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “Picking up a top-level receiver and an outstanding offensive lineman just goes to show that we are making moves to improve this organization. We are excited to have both them for next season. “

Trade Sends Abbott To Offensive Line
La Crosse, WI: After a disappointing season in the win column last year, the La Crosse Spartans continue to add talent and depth to their roster in hopes of turning things around in 2011. Today, the Spartans acquired one of the league’s most intimidating physical players in offensive lineman Courtney Abbott (6’9”, 340 lbs.) from the Kent Predators in exchange for future considerations.
Last season, he joined the Predators mid-way through the season and helped anchor the IFL’s eighth-best offense. The Predators averaged 223 yards per game and 42.6 points per game in 2010 and Abbott protected one of the league’s biggest offensive threats in quarterback Charles McCullum. He began the season playing with the West Michigan Thunderhawks and spent three years with the West Texas Roughnecks from 2007 to 2009. Abbott finished his college career at Florida State University in 2006 after transferring from East Mississippi Junior College.
“Picking up a guy like Courtney is huge to our offense and the direction that we are looking to take this organization,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “He’s big. He proved this past season he is one of the best offensive linemen in the league. He’ll be a great addition to our squad.”
The Spartans also added indoor football veteran quarterback Ryan Maiuri last week. Maiuri, along with last season’s starter Buddy Rivera, are expected to compete for the starting job behind center. Rivera is expected to be re-signed to the team in the coming weeks.

Spartans Sign QB For 2011 Campaign
La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans are proud to announce their first player signing for the upcoming 2011 season. The second-year franchise has added Ryan Maiuri to its player roster for next season. Maiuri (6’0”, 200 lbs) is a graduate of Lakeland College and previously served as the Spartans offensive coordinator in 2010. He will make the transition back to the field for next season and looks to build on his already stellar indoor football playing history.
Maiuri helped lead the River City Rage of the UIF to the conference championship game in 2008. The Rage went undefeated to close out the regular season and went deep into the playoffs after signing Maiuri mid-way through that season. He also spent time with the Steubenville Stampede of the CIFL, where he set the league’s single-game record for passing with 267 yards and four touchdowns in 2007. During that campaign, he was named offensive player of the week numerous times and consistently threw for four or more touchdowns on a weekly basis. He also added a six-touchdown performance in 2009 as a member of the Milwaukee Bonecrushers (CIFL) and spent time in the German football league as well.
“We are very happy to have Ryan in uniform with us,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “I’ve known Ryan for a few years and I’m well aware of the difference he makes on the football field as a player. He’s been working out with the receivers that have stayed in the area and we are excited to have his leadership under center as we continue to build our franchise.”
The Spartans new quarterback is currently the tight ends coach at nearby Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. He, along with Spartans Defensive Coordinator Mitch Madland is on staff for the Warriors which are ranked 24th in the nation in the latest Division II poll.
In order to make room behind center, the Spartans have released Kewan Dewberry from his contract with the team. Dewberry appeared in six games last season, throwing for 332 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. An announcement regarding the Spartans’ now-vacant offensive coordinator position is expected in the coming weeks.

Terrell, Spartans Win League Awards
Terrell-1st Team all IFL, Spartans win Community Award.
La Crosse, WI: The Indoor Football League has awarded both an individual Spartans player and the entire Spartans organization for their efforts this season. Darnell Terrell, who joined the Spartans two games into the season, was named to the IFL First-Team defense for the 2010 campaign. The University of Missouri graduate recorded 42 tackles, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble to go along with seven interceptions in 12 games. Terrell picked off four passes against the Chicago Slaughter on June 12, which earned him Player of the Week honors. He helped lead the Spartans defense which finished sixth in the league in yards surrendered (1,977.) He also contributed both as a wide receiver and kick returner for the Spartans this season.
The IFL also tabbed the La Crosse Spartans organization with the Community Relations award. The award is presented to the team that best exemplifies outstanding service and dedication to their community. The Spartans were recognized for their efforts on “Stuff the Bus”, “A Christmas to Remember”, and their day-to-day contributions of both time and resources to the La Crosse community. In addition, Spartans Head Coach Gilbert Brown has the Gilbert Brown Foundation which provides funding for several worthy causes for children in numerous communities.

INAGURAL SEASON CULMINATES AT HOME
Spartans face Extreme to finish off 2010 season.
La Crosse, WI: It all began in August 2009 as Chris Kokalis, Ken Moninski, and Bob Sullivan brought indoor football back to the city that had been missing it for seven years. Now the first official season of the La Crosse Spartans will come to a close on Saturday as the Spartans host the Bloomington Extreme at the La Crosse Center to end the 2010 campaign. While the wins have not come as easily as the team had hoped for La Crosse (3-10), they can end the season on a two-game winning streak if they can get past the Extreme.
Bloomington (8-5) has already beaten the Spartans twice this season, but the last contest came down to the wire as the playoff-bound Extreme won 40-37 in La Crosse on May 21st. Bloomington is already guaranteed a playoff spot and can actually share the Central North division title if they can beat La Crosse and Green Bay loses to Chicago. The Spartans have revenge in mind, however, and hope to secure win number four, which would tie the Spartans for the best record of any indoor football franchise ever to play in this city.
“It’s been a great season in a number of ways,” Spartans co-owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “Obviously more wins would have been nice, but to end the season on a bit of a hot streak would speak volumes for the future of our franchise.”
Tickets for the Spartans’ final home game are on sale now and can be purchased for as low as $10 at the La Crosse Center box office or at ticketmaster.com.
Darnell Terrell Named Defensive Player of the Week
Team Meet & Greet set for Thursday as well.
La Crosse, WI: For the second time this season, a La Crosse Spartan has been honored as the most prolific player in the Indoor Football League for the week. Defensive back Darnell Terrell lead the Spartans to a 27-20 victory over the Chicago Slaughter this past weekend and in doing so was named the Vidswap.com IFL Defensive Player of the Week for week 16. Terrell picked off four Slaughter passes, forced a fumble, and recorded three tackles. The former University of Missouri standout now has seven interceptions this season, which is tied for third-best in the IFL.
Terrell has actually been a force in all three phases of the game for the Spartans this season. Defensively he has 39 tackles and seven pass break ups to go along with his seven INT’s. Meanwhile on the offensive side of the ball, he has caught three passes for 38 yards. Terrell is also second on the team with 279 kick return yards in just 11 games played. “DT” as he is known to his teammates, is the second Spartan to be honored after Mark Bonds was named Offensive Player of the Week in week nine.
The Spartans and their triple-threat star will take to the field for the final time this season this Saturday night. The Spartans will host the Bloomington Extreme at 7:30 p.m. June 19. Tickets for the game are on sale now for as low as $10.
Full Team Meet & Greet Announced
Perkins restaurant is proud to host a Spartans “meet and greet” this Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at their location at 1411 Rose St. in La Crosse. All team members and select coaches will be on hand to meet the public and giveaway prizes, including tickets to this Saturday’s game against the Bloomington Extreme. For more information, contact the La Crosse Spartans office at 608-782-4461.
SPARTANS FACE PLAYOFF HOPEFULS AGAIN
La Crosse Heads to Chicago for Final Road Game
La Crosse, WI: For the third straight game, the La Crosse Spartans will be facing a team that needs a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Spartans (2-10) will make the short bus ride to Chicago to take on the Slaughter (6-6) this Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Chicago needs at least one win in its final two games to secure a playoff spot and keep the pressure on Bloomington and Omaha for the conference’s fifth seed.
Saturday’s game will mark the second time this season the two teams have played. La Crosse notched its first win in franchise history against the Slaughter on April 30 in La Crosse by a score of 35-29. Despite the win, the Spartans lost the IFL’s third-leading rusher Mark Bonds to an injury and the Spartans have not been able to get their offense back on track since. Meanwhile, Chicago has recorded victories against division-leading Green Bay and put up an IFL-record 83 points two weeks ago against West Michigan.
Spartan Nation will be making the trip to try to help the team sweep the season series between the two teams. A bus load of 45 Spartan fans will make the trek to root on the expansion franchise as they try to close out the 2010 season with two victories and a 4-10 record. The Spartans will take on the Bloomington Extreme next Saturday, June 19 to round out their inaugural campaign.
Fans not heading to Chicago can listen to the game live on KQ98 radio or watch the game live on B2tv.com. Tickets to the Spartans final home game next weekend are currently on sale and can be purchased at the La Crosse Center box office or www.lacrossespartans.com.
SPARTANS TO BATTLE LOCAL BASEBALL TEAM
Spartans/Loggers to Help Local Libraries
La Crosse, WI: It’s not often when a professional indoor football team goes head-to-head against a collegiate summer baseball team. The La Crosse Spartans of the IFL will take on the La Crosse Loggers, La Crosse’s Northwoods League baseball team this Friday, June 11. The Spartans and Loggers will battle each other off the field, though, in a “sportacular” trivia contest organized by the La Crosse County Library.
Players from both squads will answer trivia questions to determine who La Crosse’s “smartest” franchise is. The contest will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Friday at the Onalaska Library as a kickoff to the libraries’ summer reading program. The public is invited to attend to ask questions, get autographs, and celebrate the La Crosse libraries and La Crosse’s two biggest sports franchises.
“We are very excited to be a part of this fun event,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “We are excited to be partnering with the La Crosse Loggers and the La Crosse County Libraries to raise awareness for children and the importance of reading, learning, and staying in school.
In addition to an hour of fun, all children under the age of 12 attending the event will receive a free ticket to the Spartans’ final regular season game against the Bloomington Extreme on Saturday, June 19.
SPARTANS HOPE TO TAME GRIZZLIES
Team Makes First-Ever Trip to Alaska
La Crosse, WI: The long awaited trip to Alaska came a week late, but the La Crosse Spartans have finally hit the road for the long trip north. The Spartans (2-9) hope to play the role of spoiler this Saturday when they take on the Fairbanks Grizzlies (6-5) at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Fairbanks is in the midst of a heated playoff race in the Intense Conference of the IFL. The Grizzlies currently sit as a fifth-seed in the playoff hunt but could be as high as a three-seed unless La Crosse throws a wrench in those plans and secures its first road victory of the 2010 season.
The Spartans were slated to head to Alaska last week to play the Alaska Wild, but the Wild were unable to finish this season, giving the first-year franchise its second victory. In order to get win number three, the Spartans will have to overcome a strenuous two-day road trip and also overcome a three-hour time difference when they play Saturday night at 10:05 p.m. local time. La Crosse is 0-4 on the road this season and dropped its most recent road contest 54-18 in Bloomington, Illinois, on May 8.
Gilbert Brown’s squad will be on the road again next week as the team heads to Chicago on June 12, before returning home for the 2010 season finale against the Bloomington Extreme. The Spartans will host Bloomington for the second time this season as they round out their first season in the IFL on June 19.
Due to the unusual trip, the Spartans’ flagship station KQ98 will not be airing the broadcast this weekend. Fans can still listen live, however, at 820sports.com or watch the game live on the internet at b2tv.com.
Spartans Look to Put Wrinkle Into Playoff Picture
La Crosse Welcomes Bloomington to the Center
La Crosse, WI: Growing pains happen when you’re an expansion franchise in professional sports. The Spartans have gone through them in their inaugural season, but have shown plenty of promise that has generated a ton of optimism for this young team. One guarantee is that the La Crosse Spartans will not roll over and quit. They have an opportunity in these final weeks of the 2010 season to play the spoiler role and cause a huge wrinkle in the playoff picture. That begins this Friday when the team hosts the Bloomington Extreme for a 7:30 contest at the La Crosse Center. In their last contest on May 8th, the Extreme were victorious by a score of 54-18 and ever since the Spartans have been itching for a rematch.
The Extreme are currently ranked second in the Central North Division with a 5-5 overall record. Since taking over for Kenton Carr, newly appointed Head Coach Ted Schmitz has won two straight games and has his squad ready for yet another playoff run. Bloomington relies heavily on their defense to shut down opponents and are led by 2009 All-IFL First Team Linebacker Joe Bevis. The man in the middle currently ranks sixth in the league with 79 total tackles to go along with two interceptions and one sack.
La Crosse is hoping that the home crowd this weekend will give them a little advantage in this rematch. The team has had its ups and downs on offense this season, but always seem to step up their level of play at the La Crosse Center. Like the Extreme, the Spartans strength lies on the defense side of the ball. Since the departure of Linebacker Blake Freese to the CFL, Defensive Back Walner Belleus has elevated his play and become a leader on the field. He is among the league leaders in tackles with 48 and has contributed two interceptions and six pass breakups. Look for him to be matched up against Extreme Wide Receiver Johnny Grey for much of the game.
Before the game the Spartans, in partnership with Globe University, will be collecting non-perishable items that will be donated to La Crosse’s local food pantry Wafer. Monetary donations will also be taken for those who wish to donate to a great cause. Representatives from Globe will be collecting from the time doors open until approximately half way through the first quarter. In conjunction with this effort, the Spartans will offer a $1 off coupon to their June 19th game, also against Bloomington, as well as a raffle ticket for a signed Gilbert Brown Football. Tickets are still available by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299 or by visiting the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted tickets are also available for groups of 10 or more. Spartans and Globe University Partner for Community Effort
Fans Urged to Bring Non-Perishable Items to May 21st Game
La Crosse, WI: Community efforts were listed as a top priority for the La Crosse Spartans front office when they were accepted as an expansion franchise into the IFL last October. Their mission has, and continues to be, to give back to the area that has come to support them so much in their first season. On Friday, May 21st before the team’s game against the Bloomington Extreme, the Spartans in partnership with Globe University, will be collecting non-perishable items that will be donated to La Crosse’s local food pantry Wafer.
“The Spartans and Globe University are proud to be able to assist in the effort to help those less fortunate then ourselves,” stated Spartans Co-owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “I urge those attending to bring as many items as possible, as even one kind gesture can help many.”
The team hopes to bring a win back home this Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7:30. Tickets are still available by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299 or by visiting the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted tickets are also available for groups of 10 or more. Spartans Extremely Confident
Team Travels to Bloomington Looking for Win # 2
La Crosse, WI: After achieving their first win in team history last weekend, the La Crosse Spartans will be going for a couple of other “firsts” this Saturday when they take on the Bloomington Extreme: A first road victory, and their first winning streak. With an offensive unit running on all cylinders, an already stout defense, and a kicking game vastly improved since early in the season the Spartans seem to have put it all together just in time for a second half run in the crowded United Conference. After five straight home contests, the team gets back on the road to take on the Bloomington Extreme at the US Cellular Coliseum.
The Extreme are currently ranked third in the Central North Division with a 3-5 overall record. A 2009 playoff team, the Extreme have been disappointed by their 2010 start and announced this week that Ted Schmitz would be taking over as Head Coach for Kenton Carr. They largely lead by their defense which features 2009 First Team Linebacker Joe Bevis. The standout tackler currently ranks fifth in the IFL with 68 total tackles and has intercepted two passes in addition to his one sack. Bloomington is right in the thick of things as they challenge for a playoff spot in the seasons second half.
La Crosse is riding high after their first win last weekend against the Chicago Slaughter. The Defense continued their stellar play, limiting the amount of chances that star Running back Jarrett Payton could touch the ball. However they were given some devastating news during the week when it was determined that their own star Running back and one of the IFL’s top players Mark Bonds Jr. would need surgery to repair a torn Achilles. Without Bonds, look for Coach Gilbert Brown to allow Quarterback Buddy Rivera to put the air more often, especially with Wide Receivers Aaron Straiten and Antonio Overstreet playing at such a high level of late.
Kickoff in Bloomington is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 8th. Fans wishing to watch the game can log onto www.b2tv.com and purchase a season or individual game pass. The team will return home on Friday, May 21st against these same Extreme. Tickets are still available by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299 or by visiting the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted tickets are also available for groups of 10 or more. For more information on tickets, or for general Spartans news, visit www.lacrossespartans.com.
Spartans Second Half Begins with a Bang for Spartans
La Crosse Upends Slaughter for First Win in Team History
La Crosse, WI: It wasn’t how they wanted to begin their first season, but after Friday night’s victory against the Chicago Slaughter the La Crosse Spartans are feeling a sense of confidence as they begin the IFL’s second half. In their fifth straight home game, all in the month of April, the Spartans faithful came out to the La Crosse Center ready to see the team’s first win. They got what they came for as the team used a balance of offensive pressure and stout defense to net their first win in franchise history. At game’s end, the scoreboard read 35-29 and moved the Spartans to 1-7 on the year.
At the beginning of the game, it was evident that both defenses came to play. The two teams traded back and forth stops until Spartans Kicker nailed a 29 yard field goal to begin the scoring. On their next possession, Quarterback Buddy Rivera led a nine play, 45 yard drive into Slaughter territory, capping it off with a one yard scoring run to increase the lead to 9-0. Two Slaughter touchdowns and another by Spartans Running back Mark Bonds had the Spartans up 15-14 at halftime and feeling confident for their first victory.
To begin the second half it seemed that the game may turn back into the opponents favor. Star Running back Jarrett Payton finished off a seven play 33 yard drive by powering across the goal line from seven yards out. A Tavares Woodley run put the Slaughter up 22-15 to begin the third quarter. Rivera then, playing in just his second game as a Spartan, led two consecutive scoring drives, highlighted by a 35 yard scoring strike to Christopher Headd. Chicago came back with a score of their own to inch closer, but again the La Crosse defense came up big. Attempting to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, Defensive Back Paul Simpson intercepted a Randy Hutchinson pass in the Slaughter zone, setting up an Antonio Overstreet five yard scoring run and sealing the Spartans first win in team history. The Spartans now have the monkey off their back, and hope to continue this success as the season’s second half continues.
The team now gears up for a road contest against the Bloomington Extreme next Saturday, May 8th. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the US Cellular Coliseum. Fans who wish to watch the game can purchase a season or individual game pass on www.b2livetv.com. The team is on the road until a May 21st home game also against Bloomington. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted group tickets are also available by calling the team office at 608-567-4299.
Game Notes: The Spartans Defense held Hutchinson to under 50% passing and only 100 yards thru the air...Rivera completed 9 of 17 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 29 yards and a score…Linebacker George Carpenter finished the game with five unassisted tackles, one sack, and one tackle for a loss…Payton ran seven times for 27 yards and two touchdowns while also catching two passes for 31 yards.
Spartans Look to Slaughter Next Opponent
A Revamped Offense Has La Crosse Confident for First Win
La Crosse, WI: Coach Gilbert Brown and the rest of the La Crosse Spartans have plenty of reasons to be excited heading into the season’s second half. Last week, a previously anemic offense finally lived up to the potential that plenty in the organization have been clamoring about since March. Living up to that potential, plus the additions of three skill players via free-agent signings, allowed the offense to out up 58 points on the normally stout West Michigan defense. The revamped game plan has seen the Spartans rely heavily on the running game, and then hit their opponent with a daggering long bomb. The team now welcomes the Chicago Slaughter to the La Crosse Center in what promises to be a knock out, drag out battle between the two Central North Division foes.
Chicago currently sits in second place in the Central North, just a half game above the Bloomington Extreme, with a 3-3 record. It is a large improvement considering the Slaughter began the season at 0-3. They too, like the Spartans, seem to feature their running game as much, if not more, then the pass. Runningback Jarrett Payton is averaging nearly 30 yards per game on the ground, and has found the endzone seven times. He is also a featured weapon as a pass catcher as well, having caught 16 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. A win over the Spartans would allow the Slaughter to keep pace in the United Conference playoff race.
La Crosse is fresh off that offensive outburst against the West Michigan Thunderhawks. Runningback Mark Bonds ran for nearly 100 yards on the ground, and found the endzone five times to garner him Week Nine VidSwap.com Offensive Player of the Week honors. The spark on offense was also do in large part to the free agent signings the team made mid-week. Former Thunderhawks QB Buddy Rivera was brought in to lead the team, and continually lead drives that produced the most points the team has scored all season. Another newcomer, Aaron Straiten seems to have found a quick connection with Rivera as well. He hauled in five passes for 74 yards and a score in his first game. To beat the former CIFL Champion’s the offense will have to continue to progress, and the defensive unit, lead by standout Defensive Lineman Xzavie Jackson, will need to limit the amount of long drives the Slaughter can produce.
Kickoff for the teams fifth consecutive home game this month is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted group tickets are also available by calling the team office at 608-567-4299.
Spartans Bonds Named Vidswap.com Offensive Player of the Week
Runningback's Five Touchdown Performance Propels Teams Improved Attack
La Crosse, WI: In release made today, the league office of the Indoor Football League announced that La Crosse Spartans Runningback Marl Bonds was selected as the Week Nine VidSwap.com Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the team’s last minute loss to the West Michigan Thunderhawks.
Bonds becomes the first member of the Spartans to earn weekly accolades for his on the field performance. The Thunderhawks had no answer for him as he slashed and dashed his way to 96 yards via the ground on just 15 carries, and found the endzone a remarkable five times. The five rushing touchdowns in a single game is the most by any player in the IFL this season. Unfortunatley, Bonds efforts were not enough to get La Crosse its first victory, as they fell victim to a Brad Iciek touchdown pass with just 24 seconds left in the game for a 58-65 loss. Look for Coach Gilbert Brown to continue to put the ball in the hands of his star in the backfield as they take on Division foe, the Chicago Slaughter, this Friday in the Spartans fifth consecutive home contest at the La Crosse Center.
The league also announced that Arkansas Diamonds Defensive back Kenneth Fontenette and Green Bay Blizzard Kick Returner B.J. Hill were selected as the Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week respectively. Fans who would like to see highlights of these players performance’s from week one should log onto the IFL website at www.goifl.com and click on the VidSwap.com Player of the Week icon’s.
Bonds and the rest of his Spartan teammates are back in action this Friday against the Chicago Slaughter. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. . Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted group tickets are also available by calling the team office at 608-567-4299.
Spartans Nipped in Last Minute by Thunderhawks
Offensive Outburst Nets Optimism for Season's Second Half
La Crosse, WI: After weeks of lackluster play on the offensive side of the ball, the La Crosse Spartans put in the performance they have sorely been lacking. Some big additions at the skill positions this week translated into the teams best offensive performance of the season as the offense exploded for 58 points. In a back and forth battle of lead exchanges the Spartans were even in position for their first victory with under a minute left, however the West Michigan Thunderhawks were able to drive down the field quickly for a game winning score with 24 seconds left in the contest.
To the Spartans delight, the Thunderhawks cut Quarterback Buddy Rivera in favor of Brad Iciek earlier in the week, and La Crosse quickly scooped him up. His presence in this game surely jump started an offense that ranked among the lowest in the IFL in total production. The bright signal caller learned the offense quickly and ran the game plan to perfection. By putting the ball in the hands of star running back Mark Bonds, who ran in for two first have scores, and completing a long 40 touchdown pass to another newcomer in Wide Receiver Aaron Straiten, the Spartans took a 29-28 lead into halftime.
The game plan didn’t change much in the second half, as the Thunderhawks struggled to bring down Bonds. Mixed with raw power and agility, the La Crosse running back found the endzone three more times for a season high five rushing touchdowns. However, Iciek for the Thunderhawks was just as impressive. He continually found open receivers and had six touchdown passes by the middle of the fourth quarter. The two teams continued to trade scores, and after Bonds fifth touchdown the scoreboard read 58-57 Spartans with 34 seconds left to play. The Spartans kickoff was returned beyond mid-field setting up a chance for Iciek to be a hero. He pulled through, throwing the eventual game winning touchdown pass 20 yards, his seventh, to receiver Bryan Pray.
The loss lowers the Spartans record to 0-7 on the season, but the improved offense has the team and coaching staff optimistic going into the second half of the season. The team now gears up for their fifth straight home game of the month next Friday against the Chicago Sluaghter. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office. Discounted group tickets are also available by calling the team office at 608-567-4299.
Game Notes: Bonds finished the night with 15 carries for 96 yards and five touchdowns...Rivera completed 13 of 20 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns…In his first game as a Spartan, Straiten caught 5 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown…Hawks QB Iciek completed 28 of 38 passes for 313 yards and sevon touchdowns…Pray caught 11 balls for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
West Michigan to Face Old Buddy in La Crosse
Spartans Ink Ex-Thunderhawk QB Buddy Rivera; Straiten and Hellams Added Too
La Crosse, WI: When the West Michigan Thunderhawks face the La Crosse Spartans this Friday at the La Crosse Center, they will have to face one of their old teammates just days after his release. La Crosse this week signed three talented players to help their staggering offense, a group that includes Quarterback Buddy Rivera. Rivera was recentley let go by the Thunderhawks and quickly snatched up by the Spartans. The dual-threat signal caller has appeared in one game thus far, completing 10 of 16 passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns versus zero interceptions.
“Rivera instantly makes us a better team,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “He is a proven indoor football Quarterback, and we value his ability to hurt teams with both his arm and his legs. The other moves made this week will greatly improve our offense as well, and we will continue to evaluate talent to make this team as good as we know it can be”
The team also signed Wide Receivers Aaron Straiten and Lawrence Hellams to add size and speed to the outside. Straiten, a 6 ft. 2 inch speedster from UNLV compiled 534 yards in 20 games for the Rebels to go along with three touchdowns. He will be counted on to give Rivera a dominating presence in the slot. Hellams played at both Howard University and Upper Iowa, and recentley had a tryout with the Washington Redskins. He will bring along his 4.47, 40 yard dash speed to an offense that needs another proven deep threat.
The three new additions will be in uniform for the Spartans this Friday evening when the Atlantic East Division’s second place team comes to town. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the La Crosse Center. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out fast! Come see the team get its first win in franchise history by purchasing tickets at www.lacrossespartans.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. Spartans First Win is Guaranteed
Sioux City Comes to Town as La Crosse Goes for First Victory
La Crosse, WI: Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis is confident in his team. So much so in fact that despite an 0-5 record, he has guaranteed that the Spartans will notch their first victory in their short history. The bold move makes the Spartans the first team in professional sports to ever guarantee a win without ever having recorded a franchise victory.
”These players are amped up for this game, and it has no doubt been their best week of practice,” stated Kokalis. “The confidence this team still has to resurrect this season, and rise up the standings has us feeling that we can’t lose.”
The team standing in the way of La Crosse is the Sioux City Bandits. Led by Quarterback, and 2009 IFL Player of the Year candidate James McNear, the Bandits have a 2-3 record and sit in a third place tie with the Omaha Beef for third place in the Central West Division. Sioux City is coming off a 57-23 loss at the hands of the Sioux Falls Storm last week, and are eager to keep pace in the division. McNear has tossed a total of 19 touchdowns this season versus only four interceptions. The Spartans defensive backs will have to account for receivers Leon Hall Jr. and John Bentley to limit the Quarterback through the air.
The Spartans enter this game fresh off their best performance of the season taking Central North Division leader Green Bay to the wire before eventually falling 43-30. To make matters worse for the Bandits, starting Quarterback Jimmy Sangster is expected to suit up for the Spartans in this game after recovering from a torn MCL in the team’s first game. It is unknown yet how much time Sangster will log in this game, so the Bandits must prepare for both him and Kewan Dewberry. Running back Mark Bonds has become the Spartans GO-TO man of late when the team needs a big play. He is averaging 47.5 yards per game on the ground to go along with six rushing touchdowns.
Kickoff at the La Crosse Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. this Sunday. Should the team NOT win the game, fans who purchased tickets for the game will be able to redeem their ticket stub for a free ticket to the May 21st game against the Bloomington Extreme. In addition, the team is securing additional prizes from local sponsors to give added value to purchasing tickets. Prizes include free bowling from Features, six free wings from Buffalo Wild Wings and free camping at Jellystone Park. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out FAST! First Spartans player headed to the next level:
The La Crosse Spartans announced today that Linebacker Blake Freese will be leaving the team to pursue invited workouts with multiple members of the Canadian Football League, which include the Montreal Allouettes and Edminton Eskimoes.
“One of the goals of this league is to help young men advance their professional football careers,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “We're proud of Blake and are excited that the La Crosse Spartans organization provided this outstanding young man with an opportunity to showcase his skills and move closer towards his goals.” Coach Gilbert Brown echoed Kokalis' statements. "Not only is Blake a phenomenal football player, but also provides leadership on and off the field. Although it’s tough to lose someone of his caliber on the field, we are very excited for him, and are excited to follow his career as he advances his game."
In just five games this season, the Spartans linebacker ranks seventh in the league in tackles with 44 (24 solo), and most recently intercepted a pass against the Green Bay Blizzard which he returned for an 16 yard touchdown. The Minnesota State-Mankato product has also recorded two sacks thus far.
Signal-caller Sangster to suit up:
Jimmy Sangster, the Spartans starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, will be in uniform this Sunday against the Sioux City Bandits. Sangster hasn’t played since his injury in the first half of the Spartans first-ever game against the Wichita Wild. Before being injured, he threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Spartans Seek Redemption Against Blizzard
Green Bay Travels to La Crosse for Battle of Wisconsin Part II
La Crosse, WI: They say to be the best, you have to beat the best. The La Crosse Spartans will attempt to do just that this Sunday when they host the Green Bay Blizzard in a rematch of their March 19th 48-12 defeat. The Blizzard currently lead the Central North Division with a record of 4-1 while the Spartans continue to fight for their first win of the season. Like last weekend, playing in front of a home crowd should provide a spark for the team, and a win will further complicate the early season playoff picture and get La Crosse back into the race.
“In the NFL they say Any Given Sunday,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “That is the mindset we have headed into this contest against Green Bay. They took the first game of the season series between us, be we have improved tremendously since that last meeting.”
The Blizzard are fresh off a 46-45 victory against the 2009 Atlantic Division Champion Maryland Maniacs last weekend after coming back from a 15 point deficit to begin the fourth quarter. They are lead by Quarterback Jake Phillips who is among the IFL leaders in many passing categories. He currently ranks second in the league in touchdown passes with 17 and is number one in passing yards with 911. His primary targets are Lawrence Bady and Arlandus Hood who have combined for over 400 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. On defense, Maurice Simpkins leads the league with 44 total tackles, and has intercepted one pass thus far.
La Crosse enters the game after a tough home loss at the hands of the Omaha Beef last weekend. The defensive unit had some successes to build off of in that game however, as they held the usually potent Beef offense to just 37 points. Linebacker Blake Freese is the unquestioned leader of this unit as shown by his team leading 35 tackles, 20 of which are solo. Offensively, the Spartans have found a sparkplug in their rushing attack with the immergence of Mark Bonds who last week ran for 76 yards and three touchdowns against the Beef. Also good news is that starting Quarterback Jimmy Sangster is back at practice, but it is not known yet whether he or Kewan Dewberry will be behind center this week. The continued progression of the offense will be crucial in this game if the Spartans want to hand the Blizzard their first division loss.
Kickoff at the La Crosse Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The team will be celebrating National Cheese Fondue Day and Dandelion Day for the game as well, and will be handing out free candy to all fans who wear a cheese head or bring a dandelion to the game. The Spartans front office expects their fans to be loud, proud, and rowdy as they look to send the Blizzard back to Green Bay with a loss. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out FAST! They can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. Season and discounted group tickets are still available as well, and can be purchased by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. Spartans Tripped Up in Home Opener
La Crosse Gets Back to Work for Sunday Rematch
La Crosse, WI: Improvement is sometimes an underappreciated word, however that is the perfect way to characterize the Spartans play as of late. Playing in front of a raucous home crowd at the La Crosse Center on Saturday night, the Spartans fell 37-27 to the Omaha Beef, but it was the stout defensive play against one of the league’s top offenses, and a fierce rushing attack that has shown the rest of the Indoor Football League that this isn’t the same Spartans team that began their season a little over a month ago.
“Any fan who has followed this team can tell what an improvement we have made in a short time on both sides of the ball,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “The home crowd definitely gave us a little spark this evening, and with four more home games in a row, we fully expect the continued improvement to turn into W’s.”
Omaha jumped on the board on their first possession when Quarterback Ben Sankey, who played in last season’s United Bowl Championship as a member of the Rivercity Rage, found receiver O.J. Simpson for a ten yard strike. Then after going down 14-0, Spartans Runningback Mark Bonds took matters into his own hands. The elusive back rumbled 14 yards before crossing the goal line to give La Crosse their first points of the game. At half time the scoreboard read 20-9.
The second half belonged mainly to the Spartans. Bonds ran for two more scores, including a nine yard scamper that got the Spartans to within two points at 29-27, however the veteran Sankey caught the defense out of position on their next possession hitting Simpson once again for a 38 yard scoring strike. The pay sealed the Spartans fate, and they saw their record fall to 0-4.
The team is hoping their second half success carries over into this weekend’s home game against cross state rival, the Green Bay Blizzard. In their first meeting on March 19th, the Blizzard handed the Spartans a 48-12 defeat. Kickoff for the rematch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the La Crosse Center this Sunday. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out FAST! They can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. Partial-season and discounted group tickets are still available as well, and can be purchased by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. For more information on tickets, or for general Spartans news, visit www.lacrossespartans.com.
Game Notes: Bonds finished with 79 yards on 18 rushing attempts to go along with his three scores…Defensive Linemen Xzavie Jackson scored a 1 yard touchdown run as welcoming into the game as a short yardage back…Sankey finished the night 22 of 31 passing for 183 yards and five touchdowns…Simpson and Mo Avery combined for 135 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns.
Fans to Receive Extra Treat in Spartans Home Opener
Former Green Bay Packer to Sign Autographs at Halftime
La Crosse, WI: Fans attending this weekend’s Spartans home opener will be given an extra treat throughout the game. Former Green Bay Packers legend Bill Schroeder will be in attendance helping cheer on the Spartans to their first victory, and will be signing autographs for fans at halftime. Schroeder adds to a list of local celebrities, that include Craig Newsome and Santana Dotson, who have lent their support to the team in their inaugural season.
“We want these games to be an unforgettable experience for our fans,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “Having someone like Bill Schroeder, as a fan of this franchise, want to lend his support and help pack the La Crosse Center house speaks volumes about the appeal of this game, and how fun it truly can be.”
Saturday’s game against the Omaha Beef is the first of five straight home games in a span of 27 days for the Spartans. A win could vault them into a tie with the Chicago Slaughter in the Central North Division standings, and just a game behind Bloomington for second place. Kickoff at the La Crosse Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out FAST! They can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. Season and discounted group tickets are still available as well, and can be purchased by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. Spartans Look to Cook Beef in Home Opener
Team Expects Their “8th Man” to Help Get First Win
La Crosse, WI: Sometimes “Home Sweet Home” is EXACTLY what the doctor orders when it comes to getting back on track. The La Crosse Spartans feel that coming back to play their first of five straight home games will energize the team and be a boost as they head into the middle part of the 2010 IFL season. The La Crosse Center is sure to be rocking for the return of indoor football to the area this Saturday, and the Spartans are hoping that their fans help send the Omaha Beef away from Wisconsin with a loss.
“There is a buzz in the town about this team,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “Saturday night will be one of the biggest parties La Crosse has ever seen, and our players are extremely excited to put on a good show for the home fans.”
The Beef come into the game in fourth place in the Central West Division with a 1-2 record. They are fresh of a 57-47 loss at the hands of the Wichita Wild that was the first nationally televised regular season game in Indoor Football League history. Millions of fans around the nation watched as they lead at half time, but succumb to a strong Wild offense in the third and fourth quarters. They are lead at Quarterback by Ban Sankey, who last season was the signal caller for a RiverCity Rage team who lost to the Billings Outlaws in the first ever IFL United Bowl Championship. His primary target is Luke McCardle, who hauled in three touchdown passes against the Wild on Monday night.
La Crosse enters the game having lost each of their first three contests, all of which were on the road. A win however could vault them into a tie with the Chicago Slaughter in the Central North Division standings, and just a game behind Bloomington for second place. Quarterback Jimmy Sangster is getting closer to returning to the field after tearing his MCL in Week 1. However, it is unclear whether he or recent signing Kewan Dewberry will line up under Center this weekend. Look for whoever is throwing the ball to look in the direction of WR Antonio Overstreet early and often.
Kickoff at the La Crosse Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Spartans front office wants the crowd to bring the energy and passion and be the player’s “8th Man” as they seek their first win in team history. Tickets for the game are still available, but are running out FAST! They can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. Season and discounted group tickets are still available as well, and can be purchased by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. Spartans Downed By Storm
La Crosse Drops Third Straight Road Contest
Sioux Falls, SD: The La Crosse Spartans are sure glad to see the end of the month of March. With an IFL schedule that had the expansion franchise playing three straight road contests to begin the season, the team hopes a return home will change their fortunes. Today in Sioux Falls, the Spartans dropped their third straight game at the hands of the undefeated Storm 45-13. The same offensive issues that plagued the team in their first two games continued to haunt the Spartans.
Sioux Falls opened up the scoring on their first series as Quarterback Terrence Bryant marched his squad deep into Spartans territory and capped it off with a 3 yard scoring strike to James Terry. La Crosse answered right back as newly signed Quarterback Kewan Dewberry executed a three play drive that culminated in a 17 scoring strike to Receiver Antonio Overstreet. A missed extra point helped the Storm keep the lead at 7-6.
From there, the Storm showed why they are arguably the leagues best team in the first half of the season. Bryant, given plenty of time by his massive offensive line, continued to hit multiple receivers with pinpoint accuracy and helped Sioux Falls score 21 straight points to end the first half. With a 28-7 lead to begin the second half the Storm did not let up in the third and fourth quarter. The only other bright spot for the Spartans was a 31 yard scoring run courtesy of Mark Bonds. At game’s end, the Spartans saw their record fall to 0-3.
The Spartans return home at what seems like the perfect time to right the ship and get on a roll. April sees the team play five straight home games in 27 days, starting with an April 3rd contest against the Omaha Beef. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the La Crosse Center. Season and Individual tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office.
Game Notes: 2009 All-IFL Second Team Running back Sean Treasure ran for 75 yards and a score for the Storm…Bryant ran in two Quarterback keepers for touchdowns…The Spartans fell to fourth in the Central North Division Standings.
Spartans Look to Quiet the Storm
La Crosse Seeks Franchise's First Win in Sioux Falls
La Crosse, WI: As it often happens with expansion franchise’s in professional sports, there is often an adjustment period that takes place until the team feels comfortable on the field. The La Crosse Spartans are hoping that they have put their early struggles behind them, as they look to shock the Indoor Football League world tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Sioux Falls to take on the undefeated Storm in a 3;05 p.m. showdown.
The Storm are on their road to redemption after last season’s non-playoff appearance, and have been arguably the league’s best team through their first three games. Last week, Sioux Falls hosted the defending Champion Billings Outlaws and handed them their first loss in a 37-31 victory. They are lead by Quarterback Terrence Bryant, who has thrown ten touchdowns versus one interception, and 2009 All-IFL Second Team Running back Sean Treasure, who is averaging 50 yards per game on the ground and has found the endzone three times. If the Spartans want to win this game, neutralizing these two will have to be their top priority.
La Crosse is coming off a lopsided 48-12 defeat at the hands of division rival Green Bay last week, and is eager to right the ship against the 3-0 Storm. The team signed free agent Quarterback Kewan Dewberry this week to help rejuvenate an offense that only generated 86 of total offense. It is still undecided whether Coach Gilbert Brown will give him his first start in a Spartans uniform or allow Ben Chester another opportunity to lead the team. Look for them to put the ball in the hands of the IFL’s 2009 Scoring Leader Ulysses Odoms more often this game as they try to put more points on the board.
Fans who wish to watch the game can purchase a season or individual game pass on www.b2livetv.com. The team comes home on April 3rd for their first ever home contest against the Omaha Beef. Season and Individual tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office. It will be the first of five home games in the month of April in a 27 day period.
Spartans Add Experience to Quarterback Position
Kewan Dewberry Signed to Get Offense Back on Track
La Crosse, WI: As Jimmy Sangster continues to rehab from a torn MCL, suffered in the first half of the Spartans opening night loss against the Wichita Wild, the team announced today that they have signed indoor football veteran Kewan Dewberry to step in and fill the void. The former Morehouse University signal caller is a dual threat behind center, and is known for making just as many plays with his feet as he does with his arm. He most recently was a part of an Abilene Ruff Rider’s team who in 2009 finished in second place in the Lone Star Division. The 6’2 200 lb. Quarterback also lead the Lexington Horsemen of the AF2 in 2007 & 2008.
“Our offense needed a jolt, and Kewan (Dewberry) adds the valuable experience behind center that our young team needs,” stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. “We have too much talent on the offensive side of the ball with the likes of Ulysses Odoms, Ya’Tarrie Brown, and Antonio Overstreet to not be putting more points on the board.”
Dewberry and the rest of the Spartans have been hitting the practice field hard of late as they prepare themselves to face Sioux Falls on Sunday. The Storm is currently 3-0 and sits in first place in the Central West Division. Game time for the team’s third straight road game is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Fans wishing to watch the game can log onto www.b2tv.com and purchase a season or individual game pass. The team will return home on Saturday, April 3rd for their home opener against the Omaha Beef. Season and discounted group tickets are still available by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. Individual tickets can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by visiting the La Crosse Center Box Office. For more information on tickets, or for general Spartans news, visit www.lacrossespartans.com.

The Spartans will also be holding a Business Networking Event on Monday, March 29th from 5-7 p.m. at the Dock 7 Banquet Hall on 1501 St. Andrew St. in La Crosse. The event is exclusive to Spartans’ corporate partners and local chamber of commerce members. Spartans Frozen by Blizzard
La Crosse Can't Get Offense on Track in Cross-State Battle
Green Bay, WI: No matter the talent level on the field, sometimes experience can have an overwhelming factor on the outcome of a game. The La Crosse Spartans, playing in just their second game in franchise history, could not keep up with the former AF2 Green Bay Blizzard. It was a back and forth battle through the first half, but offensive woes continued to plague the Spartans and they eventually fell 48-12.
The game began with the Blizzard attempting an on-sides kick that found its way out of bounds. Even with excellent field position, the Spartans couldn't put the ball in the endzone and had their field goal attempt blocked. It was a prelude to how the rest of the game would go. Green Bay scored on their first possession as Quarterback Jake Phillips converted a two yard pass to Derek Deardorff to get them on the board. Ben Chester, starting his first game at Quarterback for the injured Jimmy Sangster, couldn't seem to find a rhythm with his offensive line and wide receivers for the Spartans and went three and out on his next series.
The Spartans defense and special teams unit seemed to give them a glimmer of hope in the second quarter as Defensive back Paul Simpson intercepted a Phillips pass on his own goal line and raced 50 yards for their first score. A failed extra point attempt made the game 7-6. After the Blizzard marched down the field on their next possession for a score, Antonio Overstreet took the ensuing kickoff 53 yards for a score. An unsuccessful two point conversion attempt got the Spartans to within 14-12, however that would be as close as they got the rest of the game. Green Bay rattled off 34 unanswered points from the end of the second quarter and into the second half and stymied Chester and the La Crosse offense.
"We'll get this thing going soon, believe me," stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "We've seen some positive things thus far and will eventually put all the pieces together to make a run this season."
Game Notes: Spartans DB Walner Belleus, last year's CIFL interception leader, picked off two Jake Phillips passes on the night...Overstreet's kickoff return for a touchdown was the first in Spartans team history...Phillips completed 18 of 33 passes for 159 yards and 5 touchdowns...WR James Finley caught three passes, all for touchdowns for the Blizzard.
New Quarterback at the Helm Tonight for Spartans
Ripon's Ben Chester to Lead La Crosse
La Crosse, WI: With Quarterback Jimmy Sangster still nursing a knee injury from the Spartans opening night loss to the Wichita Wild, Ben Chester will have his first opportunity to earn the team its first ever win. Sangster went down late in the second half against Wichita with a slight MCL tear and is still a few weeks away from action, but the La Crosse staff is confident in Chester, a Green Bay native.
"Ben has looked good in practice," stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "He is very capable of coming in and leading this offense to its highest potential, and the entire organization is behind him."
This will be Chester's first live game playing the indoor game. He comes to the team after a career playing for Division III's Ripon College. A dual threat with his arm and his legs, Chester had his best game of 2009 against Knox College where he was 1 of 1 passing for ten yards and had nine rushes for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Chester and the rest of the Spartans will head to Green Bay this evening to take on the Blizzard at 7:05. The two met in an exhibition match back in February with the Blizzard winning on a last second field goal. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Spartans Land 2009 IFL Leading Scorer
Versatile Running back Expected to Provide Experience and Touchdowns
La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans want to be a top caliber franchise in their inaugural season in the Indoor Football League, and hope to establish a foundation that will entice the games top athletes to play in Wisconsin. Even though the team is in its infancy, it is already being billed as one of the top spots to play for elite talent. Today the team announced that they have signed the IFL's top scorer from last season in Running back Ulysses Odom. Odom was recently released from the Billings Outlaws, to the delight of the Spartans organization.
"Ulysses is a unique talent, with tremendous amount of skill and experience," stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "We couldn't be more thrilled to add him to our offense, and have all the confidence that he will pick up from where he left off last season in terms of production."
Odom, who last season played for the Lone Star Division Champion El Paso Generals, played in 11 contests in 2009 and averaged 15.5 points per game. His individual efforts helped the Generals advance to the Intense Conference Championship game and propelled the Generals to become the #1 ranked offense.
As a threat any time he touches the ball, Odom can hurt opposing defenses in a variety of ways. In 2009 he scored 28 touchdowns via the ground, 5 through the air, and 2 on returns. And with starting Quarterback Jimmy Sangster still sidelined with a knee injury, the team will rely on Odom to carry some of the load.
Odom and the rest of the La Crosse Spartans will look to even their record to 1-1 this Friday, March 19th against cross-state rivals the Green Bay Blizzard. The two met in an exhibition match back in February with the Blizzard winning on a last second field goal. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Fans wishing to watch the game can log onto www.b2tv.com and purchase a season or individual game pass. The team will return home on Saturday, April 3rd for their home opener against the Omaha Beef. Season and discounted group tickets are still available by calling the Spartans office at 608-567-4299. Spartans Fall in Season Debut
Defending Central Division Champions Win 57-20
La Crosse, WI: After months of preparations, the La Crosse Spartans kicked off the 2010 Indoor Football League campaign last night in Wichita, Kansas against the defending Central Division Champion Wild. After keeping it close through the first quarter of play, the heralded Wild offense, led by 2009 All-IFL Team Wide Receiver Clinton Solomon, busted out in a big way and scored 29 second quarter points and never looked back. At games end the scoreboard read 57-20 with Wichita dealing the Spartans their first loss of the young season.
The game starting off promising for the expansion franchise in the opening minutes as Spartans Quarterback Jimmy Sangster found MacArthur White Jr. on the team's fourth play from scrimmage for a 15 yard touchdown pass. But the Wild answered right back with 27 yard touchdown pass of their own from Dixie Wooten to Solomon to take 7-6 lead. From there, the Spartans offense never regained momentum and could not find a consistent rhythm. A bad exchange on their next possesion led to a turnover, and eventually set up a Darius Fudge touchdown run. Wichita would not relinquish the lead from that moment forward.
To make matters worse, Sangster left the game in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury and did not return. He was replaced behind Center by Phillip Ditto. The injury occurred just as it appeared that Sngster was getting more comfortable in the pocket. He finished the night completing 11 of 17 passes for 136 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception.
The Spartans now have two straight bye weeks to prepare for their next contest on March 19th at the Green Bay Blizzard. The time off will prove to be invaluable to Coach Gilbert Brown and his staff as they assess their Quarterback situation, and make adjustments to their game plan. The team comes home on April 3rd for their first ever home contest against the Omaha Beef. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office.
Spartans Kickoff Official Start to 2010 IFL Season
Team Battles Defending Central Division Champion Wichita Wild
La Crosse, WI: The day has finally come for the La Crosse Spartans, as their inaugural 2010 campaign kicks off this evening against the Wichita Wild. After months of preparation that included lease negotiations, player signings, hiring of staff, and plenty more, the team will finally take the field for their first meaningful game in team history. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from the Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
Tonight marks the official beginning of the 2010 Indoor Football League season, with a total of five games being scheduled for this weekend. "Everyone starts with a clean slate," stated Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "We have a tough first test tonight against the Wild, but our guys are ready to play. Tonight should be an intense battle."
In 2009, the Wichita Wild finished the regular season 8-6 and reached the United Conference Championship game, eventually falling to the RiverCity Rage. Spartans ball hawking Linebacker, Blake Freese will be counted on to neutralize a Wild offense that averaged 45.1 points per game last season. They are lead by three of last season's Player of the Year candidates in Quarterback Dixie Wooten, Running back Darius Fudge (2009 IFL Rookie of the Year), and Wide Receiver Clinton Solomon.
Fans who want to watch the game, can log onto www.b2tv.com and purchase a season pass to view each of the 14 Spartan regular season games. Spartans Set 2010 Opening Night Roster
Team Prepares for Friday Road Game vs. Wichita
La Crosse, WI: As training camp nears its conclusion following a 14-11 exhibition loss to the Green Bay Blizzard on Sunday, Coach Gilbert Brown and staff have set their 25 man roster for Friday's first regular season game. The men selected were cut down from a group of 45 individuals that originally came to camp almost two weeks ago. The Spartans now set their sights on their first game in team history this Friday, on the road, against the Wichita Wild. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Leading the team will be Quarterback Jimmy Sangster, a January signing, who last season was the backup signal caller for the United Conference Champion RiverCity Rage. In two contests in 2009 he completed 18 of 36 passes for 197 yards, 3 touchdowns, and added a score on the ground.
"It has been a long road to get to this point," stated Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "After seeing the guys in a live game we think we have selected a great group of players to represent the team and the city of La Crosse, and we look forward to the challenge of taking on one the league's elite teams this weekend."
In 2009, the Wichita Wild finished the regular season 8-6 and reached the United Conference Championship game, eventually falling to Sangster's Rage 43-30. Former Packer Greats to Attend Spartans Preseason Battle
Fans Invited to Attend Gilbert Brown Birthday Bash at Club Impulse Following Game
La Crosse, WI: When the La Crosse Spartans play their first game in team history this Sunday from the La Crosse Center, two former NFL greats will be on hand to cheer them on. Former Green Bay Packer legends Craig Newsome and Santana Dotson will be in the stands as the Spartans welcome the Green Bay Blizzard for an Indoor Football League pre-season tilt.
Newsome, a former first round pick out of Arizona State, played Defensive back for five seasons in the NFL, four of which were with the Packers. During the 1996 Super Bowl Season, he intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble while playing in all 16 games. Dotson, the 1992 Defensive Rookie of the Year, played for Green Bay from 1996-2001. He registered 49.0 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble over a ten year career.
"What a way to kick off the opening to Spartans football here in La Crosse," stated General Manager and Co-Owner Chris Kokalis. "I am excited that our fans will be able to share this experience with two former Super Bowl Champions, and have the opportunity to witness the hard hitting and faced paced action that the indoor game has to provide." In addition, Newsome will be signing autographs at halftime for all fans who attend.
Following the game, fans and friends are invited to head over to Club Impulse, located at 214 Main Street in La Crosse, for the Gilbert Brown Birthday Bash. Coach Brown will be celebrating another year by giving back to community, as door receipt proceeds from the event will go to the Gilbert Brown Foundation and other Coulee Region youth organizations. Spartans Sign Three-Time Indoor Football Champion
Ya'Tarrie Brown to Anchor Spartans Offensive Line
La Crosse, WI: When the La Crosse Spartans hold their 2010 Kickoff Press Conference this Thursday from their new home office, they will be introducing the latest addition to their training camp roster. This week the team acquired 6ft. 5in., 365 lb. Center Ya'Tarrie Brown, who last season served as the lead blocker for the 2009 IFL Champion Billings Outlaws. He is expected to make an immediate impact for the Spartans, and anchor the middle of the offensive line.
Brown began his indoor football career after two seasons at Division II Concordia University-St. Paul. While a member of the Golden Bears, he helped protect 2005 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Year, James McNear III. He himself earned multiple awards during his Senior season, being named to the All-NSIC First Team Offense, Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region Second Team, and the Daktronics All-Region Second Team.
Following his collegiate campaign, Brown signed to play for the Sioux Falls Storm of the old United Indoor Football Association in 2007. He was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team that year and went on to help the Storm win the 2007 and 2008 UIF Championship games. In 2009, the first year of the Indoor Football League, Brown signed to play for the Billings Outlaws who beat the River City Rage 71-62 in the first ever IFL United Bowl. In that game, he paved the way for Runningbacks Tim Brown and Charles Anthony to rush for over 150 yards and three scores.
The signing of Brown gives Coach Gilbert Brown and his staff an experienced indoor player who brings a winning mentality to an expansion franchise. "Ya'Tarrie is a proven winner," reiterated Spartans Co-Owner Chris Kokalis. "He not only brings extraordinary talent, but an attitude that shows other players we can compete in any game this season."
Brown, along with other members of the Spartans roster, will be introduced at tomorrow's 11am Press Conference from the Spartans headquarters located at 1501 Saint Andrew Street in La Crosse. Other announcements expected to be made are plans for radio broadcast of all team games, the hiring of an assistant coaching staff, and details of a pre-season matchup against the neighboring Green Bay Blizzard on February 21st. Members of the media are asked to arrive by 10:30am.

Spartans Ready For "Super" Weekend
Team Celebrates Biggest Weekend in Sports with Multiple Charity Initiatives
La Crosse, WI: As the NFL's season culminates this Sunday with the Super Bowl in Miami, the expansion La Crosse Spartans 2010 campaign has just begun. This weekend the team, front office, and coaching staff will be participating in a series of charity events throughout the Wisconsin community and encourage all of their fans to attend.

Spartans Sign IFL Veteran Quarterback
Ex-Rage Signal Caller Sangster Heads to La Crosse
Head Coach Gilbert Brown and the La Crosse Spartans added an important piece to their roster today with the signing of IFL veteran Quarterback Jimmy Sangster. The 6'5 270 lb. gunslinger played last season for the United Conference Champion River City Rage as a backup to starter Ben Sankey. He made the most of his opportunities behind center when given them, playing in two contests and completing 18 of 36 passes for 197 yards, 3 touchdowns, and adding a score on the ground. "Having a Quarterback with indoor experience is a huge advantage for us heading into 2010," stated Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "Jimmy has all the qualities in terms of talent and attitude that we looked for in the leader of our offense."
Before his professional career, Sangster played collegiately at Division II Central Missouri State for two seasons and at Southwestern Oklahoma State for another two. While at Central Missouri, he threw for nearly 3,000 yards and totaled 21 touchdown passes while completing 60% of his passes. After sitting out the 2005 season, Sangster transferred to Southwestern Oklahoma State where he played for two years accumulating nearly 2,500 yards passing, with 17 touchdown passes, while running for another six. He has since received a lot of attention from NFL scouts.
The Spartans coaches and staff expect big things out of the Quarterback this season, and he expects the same out of the team. "I am excited to be back in the saddle playing again for another year," he stated. "With the team Chris Kokalis and Coach Brown are putting together, I truly believe we have a viable shot at contending for the IFL Championship this year."
Sangster and 44 other players begin training in early February, before opening up the 2010 season on the road against the Wichita Wild on February 27th. In the meantime, the team will host its final open tryout this weekend. The cost is $65 and registration will begin at 6pm in UW-Lacrosse's Mitchell Hall, located at 1725 State Street. The tryout will last from 7-10pm and continue the next day at 10am-1pm. Those interested in trying out should log onto www.lacrossespartans.com or call 608-567-4299.

In addition to Freese, the Spartans have inked three others with indoor experience to its training camp roster. Matt Wakefield, a former offensive lineman from Oklahoma State, finished his college career at Southwest Oklahoma State as an all-conference performer in 2007. Professional Indoor Football Is Returning To La Crosse
Packer's Great Gilbert Brown To Be Named Team's Head Coach
The La Crosse Spartans, an expansion professional football franchise, have signed a letter of intent to play within the Indoor Football League (IFL) beginning in March of 2010. The team is in discussion with the La Crosse Center to become its home-field venue.
"We are extremely excited to bring Professional Indoor Football back to the city of La Crosse," said Chris Kokalis, Spartans co-owner and general manager. "This is a great sports town and we look forward to becoming active members of the community. We are committed to building a long-term relationship with the city of La Crosse, local businesses, the Indoor Football League and football fans. We took a close look at several options regarding available leagues and were extremely impressed by the professionalism and stability of the IFL."
The Indoor Football League (www.goifl.com) is a 19-team league based out of Richmond, Virginia with franchises in 13 states (including Alaska). The league holds a 14-game regular season schedule that runs March through June. The IFL's playoffs culminate in August with the IFL United Bowl. In addition to a seven game home schedule, the Spartans will also host one pre-season game and a family night event.
The Spartans are co-owned by Wisconsin businessmen Chris Kokalis and Bob Sullivan. Kokalis has a lengthy resume within professional sports. He has held a variety of administrative, marketing and sales positions with teams such as the Minnesota Thunder, Milwaukee Rampage and Los Angeles Dodgers. Most recently, he served as General Manager of the Milwaukee Bonecrushers of the Continental Indoor Football League from October 2007 to April 2008. Sullivan has 32 years of business experience in sales, sales management and marketing in the United States and Canada. He is currently the Owner/President of RDS Print-Promo Solutions, a marketing firm that provides creative printing, apparel and promotional product solutions.
Kokalis and Sullivan are also in discussions with a potential local investor who is not being identified at this time.
Area football fans are likely to be very familiar with head coach Gilbert Brown, a Super Bowl Champion as a defensive lineman with the Green Bay Packers and a member of the team's hall of fame.
"Having the opportunity to become a part of a great community like La Crosse is an honor for me," said Brown. "I have always enjoyed my visits to the La Crosse area because it has some of the best football fans in the state. We have a lot of work to do to make sure that we put the best quality product on the field and bring a winning team to the community. I am up to the challenge. We have the opportunity to tap into local and regional talent and assist in the development of players working towards the chance to play in the NFL."
Brown is also the founder and philanthropist of the Gilbert Brown Foundation (www.gilbertbrownfoundation.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing youth with an environment that promotes structure and life-skills through team-building and acceptance of community diversity. The Gilbert Brown Foundation offers a free football camp for inner city youths, hosts a turkey giveaway, provides necessary school supplies for children, and donates coats and toys to children during the holidays. The foundation also sends footballs to America's troops serving overseas.
